Ingredients
- 1 whole chicken
- 4-5cloves garlic
- 4-5pieces dried jujube (Korean dates)
- 2-3pieces fresh ginseng roots (or 1-2 teaspoon dried ginseng powder)
- 2-3pieces chestnuts (optional)
- 1 whole medium size onion
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 6-7cups water
- 2 green onions (for garnish)
- Soy sauce (optional, for seasoning)
Instructions
- Preparation
- Clean the chicken thoroughly, removing any remaining feather and internal organs. Rinse the chicken under cold water and pat it dry with paper towels.
- Stuffing the Chicken
- Stuff the chicken cavity with garlic, onion, jujube, chestnut (if using),and ginseng roots.
- Cooking the Soup
- Place the stuffed chicken in the large pot.
- Add 6-7 cups of water to the pot,ensuring the chicken is fully submerged.
- Bring the water to boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 1.5to 2 hours. The chicken should be tender and fully cooked and broth should be rich andflavorful.
- Seasoning
- After cooking, carefully remove the chicken from the pot and place it in a serving bowl.
- Skim any excess fat from the surface of the broth.
- Season the broth with salt and pepper to taste. You can also add a splash of soy sauce for extra flavor (optional & if desired).
- Serving
- Pour the hot broth over the chicken in th serving bowl.
- Garnish with chopped green onions.
- Serve the Samgyetang hot, accompanied by side dishes like kimchi and rice.
