Ingredients

  • 1 whole chicken
  • 4-5cloves garlic
  • 4-5pieces dried jujube (Korean dates)
  • 2-3pieces fresh ginseng roots (or 1-2 teaspoon dried ginseng powder)
  • 2-3pieces chestnuts (optional)
  • 1 whole medium size onion
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 6-7cups water
  • 2 green onions (for garnish)
  • Soy sauce (optional, for seasoning)

Instructions

  1. Preparation
    • Clean the chicken thoroughly, removing any remaining feather and internal organs. Rinse the chicken under cold water and pat it dry with paper towels.
  2. Stuffing the Chicken
    • Stuff the chicken cavity with garlic, onion, jujube, chestnut (if using),and ginseng roots.
  3. Cooking the Soup
    • Place the stuffed chicken in the large pot.
    • Add 6-7 cups of water to the pot,ensuring the chicken is fully submerged.
    • Bring the water to boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 1.5to 2 hours. The chicken should be tender and fully cooked and broth should be rich andflavorful.
  4. Seasoning
    • After cooking, carefully remove the chicken from the pot and place it in a serving bowl.
    • Skim any excess fat from the surface of the broth.
    • Season the broth with salt and pepper to taste. You can also add a splash of soy sauce for extra flavor (optional & if desired).
  5. Serving
    • Pour the hot broth over the chicken in th serving bowl.
    • Garnish with chopped green onions.
    • Serve the Samgyetang hot, accompanied by side dishes like kimchi and rice.
